“I was born in California and grew up in Ripon, a small town where officers would stop and talk to you if you weren’t wearing a helmet riding a skateboard, bike, scooter, or anything of that nature. When I was about 8 years old, Ripon opened up a brand new skatepark that was made of super smooth concrete. It was the type of skatepark that Tony Hawk would like, you could go really fast and get massive air.
However, when it got crowded, the risk of running into another skateboarder increased dramatically. And that’s exactly what happened to me. I ran into someone, my head hit the ground and I got a concussion and experienced amnesia for about the rest of the day. If I wasn’t habitually wearing my helmet, I’m actually not sure if I would be here typing this.
So, my question is… What or who in Ripon caused an entire police department to enforce helmets? It seems like such a little thing. Of all the responsibilities a city has to deal with, requiring helmets was probably just one thing someone seriously thought about and basically ordered an entire police department to enforce it.
But what if Ripon had other issues to deal with? Such as serious crimes, infrastructure issues, and pollution. Do you think they would give a rat’s ass about helmets? I personally don’t think so. Because, if there were serious crimes to tend to, the police simply wouldn’t have the time to deal with things like helmets. The serious crimes would take priority.
Let’s expand this and think about a country dealing with war. In a lot of cases, they must allocate a huge amount of their budget towards defense, and this can result in there not being enough leftover for things like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. So then, all these other issues pile up and their citizens have to deal with things that likely could’ve been avoided if there was peace.
So this way of looking at the world is essentially the reason why I started this company. Many people do not have the time to think about all the big and little ways the human experience could be improved. Unless maybe if there’s something in it for them. Such as an investment they can make, whether that’s a publicly traded company or something else.
I think what gets in the way for many people is that they have to sift through a lot of emotionally triggering information to learn about what’s going on in the world. Because, the truth is that there are billions of things going on at any given moment, bad and good. So why only focus on a few select stories?”
